Parks & reserves: Samburu, Buffalo Springs & Shaba National Reserves
Lodging
In Samburu:
Samburu Game Lodge:
Samburu Game Lodge is the most classic accommodation in the reserve, now belonging to Wilderness Lodges. It was built on the former camp site of famous elephant hunter Arthur Newmann, right at the north bank of the Ewaso Nyiro, now close to the reserve's headquarters. It has 59 rooms and includes a swimming-pool, bar, restaurant, petrol station and mechanic workshop. At dusk, employees lay a bait for the leopards on a tree at the opposite bank. The feline guest occasionally shows up. The lodge's location provides a look at the crocodiles resting on the sand by the bar, like a huge specimen named Thomas. The reptiles are also fed by the employees.
Larsens:
Larsens is a luxury tented camp belonging to Wilderness Lodges. The camp is located at the north bank of the Ewaso Nyiro, downstream Samburu Game Lodge. It houses 17 tents, restaurant and gift shop. Children under 7 are not admitted.
Samburu Intrepids:
This tented camp belongs to Heritage Hotels and has 54 beds. It is located at the north bank, west of Samburu Lodge. Its facilities are built entirely on top of stilts.
In Buffalo Springs:
Samburu Serena Lodge:
Unfortunately, Samburu Serena Lodge was badly damaged by floods in March 2010 and is currently closed for reconstruction. It is expected to reopen on higher grounds.
Before the flash floods, the lodge belonging to Serena Group was located at the south bank, west of Samburu Game Lodge. Technically, the site is off-limits of Buffalo Springs, though the access was from inside the reserve with no gate in between. Facilities included swimming pool, restaurant and bar, in addition to the usual bait for the leopards. The verandah in front of the rooms allowed for the observation of crocodiles in the river.
Samburu Simba Lodge:
The recently opened Samburu Simba Lodge, belonging to Simba Lodges, has been built on the site of the old Buffalo Springs Tented Lodge. Though now it is named after Samburu, it is actually in Buffalo Springs, on the south bank of the river.
In Shaba:
Sarova Shaba Game Lodge:
The Sarova Group facility is the only lodge accommodation in Shaba. It offers 85 rooms, restaurant, bar, petrol station and a magnificent swimming pool. Water streams run through the facilities.
Joy's Camp:
The original Joy Adamson's campsite has been used to build this luxury tented camp with 10 exclusive and sumptuous tents. The site overlooks a large natural spring.
