Fort Baringo
The remains of the Fort built by the British soldiers during the colonial rule are still visible at the edge of the Loimanange.
Kabarnet
The town of Kabarnet is the head of the Baringo County and the hometown of Daniel arap Moi, former president of the Republic of Kenya. The town itself is hardly interesting, but the location and the road that climbs up Tugen Hills, at the edge of Kerio Valley, display magnificent views. To reach from Baringo, head south from Kampi Ya Samaki along the B4 and turn right in Marigat to the C51 for Eldoret.
This town hosts the Kabarnet Museum, belonging to the National Museums of Kenya. The museum was created in the former residence of the District Comissioner and exhibits elements from the local culture and traditions, as well as information on Lake Baringo and its environment. Lush vegetation growing on its broad gardens makes it almost a small botanic park.
Ol Ari Nyiro
Ol Ari Nyiro is the 100,000 acre ranch belonging to Kuki Gallmann, the famed italian-born conservationist and author of "I dreamed of Africa", a beautiful autobiographical novel which was turned into a movie by director Hugh Hudson. You will be allowed to visit the reserve as long as you stay at one of its two luxurious accommodations. Mukutan Retreat has only three splendid rooms located at a privileged site, the escarpment bordering the Mukutan Gorge, whilst Makena's Hills hosts six enormous Arabic desert style tents to lodge 12 to 14 people.
Despite its geographical proximity to Lake Baringo, actually this is not the best place to start a trip to Ol Ari Nyiro, since the main gate is at the opposite side, on the south sector of the ranch (the easiest access to the ranch is from Nyahururu, south of Laikipia Escarpment). To drive from Baringo, take the Maralal road and diverge south to the C77. In Rumuruti, turn right at the crossroads.
