Leopard
'Panthera pardus'
Swahili: Chui
Best parks to see it: Samburu
Leopards are highly adaptable to many kinds of habitats and conditions, though they prefer wooded country, specially riverine forests. Both males and females are solitary and roam territories that can overlap, though they only get together for mating. Leopards are mainly nocturnal but can also hunt by day. They are ambush killers and can climb trees carrying heavy prey. They live 12 to 15 years.
Leopards spend most of the hot daylight hours up the trees, where their body colour and rosettes make them difficult to spot. The riverside woods that fringe the Ewaso Nyiro river in Samburu and Buffalo Springs is a likely bet to find them when they descend to the ground at dusk or dawn.
